Often called the “Physician’s Stone of Spring,” Emerald is revered as a gem of healing and divine protection. Known as the “King of Green Gems,” emerald is one of the five most precious gemstones in the world of fine jewelry. Since ancient times, it has been cherished as a powerful healing stone that symbolizes compassion, faith, kindness, eternity, luck, and happiness. Wearing an emerald is believed to bring peace and protection throughout one’s life.

The English name Emerald comes from the Persian word "Zumurud" (meaning green gem), which evolved into the Latin Smaragdus, and later transformed—through transcription errors and linguistic drift—into today’s “Emerald” or “canutillos.” In Chinese, "祖母绿" (zǔ mǔ lǜ) is a transliteration of its older forms, appearing in ancient texts like the Zhuo Geng Lu as “助木刺.” In Chinese history, it was also known as “子母绿” (mother-and-child green), “吕宋绿” (Luzon green), and “助水绿” (water-aiding green). Ming and Qing emperors adored emeralds, often setting them into their imperial headdresses alongside chrysoprase to display their noble status—proving that emeralds are by no means reserved for elders.
